Council tax

Council tax is a charge on all domestic properties such as houses, bungalows, flats and mobile homes. The money received from council tax, together with Government grants and other fees and charges enables us to provide benefits and services for the whole community.

Properties are placed into one of eight bands (A-H) depending on their market value on 1st April 1991. The Valuation Office Agency is responsible for deciding the band for each property and the band will determine how much council tax you have to pay.

The full council tax is based on two or more adults living in your property. If you are the only adult occupier you can claim a 25% discount. You may also be able to claim a discount if you live with someone else as some people are not counted for council tax purposes.

There are also certain circumstances under which a property is exempt from payment of council tax.
