Council tax benefit - appeals

Once the council has assessed your claim, you will be sent a notification showing your entitlement to benefit.  If you think the decision about your housing benefit or council tax benefit is wrong below is a list of the actions you can take.

Firstly, you can ask us to explain it to you. You may also request a 'statement of reasons', which is a letter explaining how we calculated your benefit in more detail.

If you still think the decision is wrong, you can ask us to look at it again.  We will check to make sure that the decision is correct and may revise the decision.  If you disagree with our decision you can appeal.  This must be in writing and made within one month of the date of the decision.  Your appeal should detail the reason that you disagree.  This will then be forwarded to the Tribunal Service where it will be heard by an independent panel.

You can either request an oral hearing which you may attend and ask questions yourself, or a paper hearing, where an Adjudications Officer will look at your appeal.  The Tribunal Service will usually advise you of their decision on the day of the oral hearing or will tell you in writing of their decision on a paper hearing.  If you want to know more about the Tribunal Service and how to make an appeal, please contact the Call Centre for more information and a booklet.

There is a form that you can use to make your revision request / appeal on located on the right. This can be completed online and will then be forwarded direct to the benenfits team for you. Otherwise you can download the form, complete it offline and then either post it in or return it at the Public Advise and Service Centre.
