The application will only be successful if you have a Blue Badge and meet the criteria required by parking services.
A bay will not normally be allowed if the applicant is able to provide off-street parking, by converting a front garden for instance. Social Services will sometimes provide financial assistance towards the cost of conversion.
An applicant for a disabled parking bay will also have to be classed as severely disabled and a check will be made with Social Services to confirm this.
Where a disabled bay is refused because these conditions are not met, it may be possible for the applicant to purchase a courtesy plaque, asking other drivers not to park outside the applicant's house.
If an applicant is confirmed as being eligible for a disabled person's parking bay on the carriageway, a Traffic Regulation Order must be publicly advertised in accordance with legal requirements. Any objections received must be properly considered before the bay can be installed.
A disabled person's parking bay can legally be used by any vehicle displaying a blue (formerly orange) disabled badge and cannot be reserved for a specific person or vehicle.
