Discretionary housing payments

In special circumstances you may be entitled to a discretionary housing payment if there is a shortfall between the benefit you receive and your eligible rent or Council Tax liability.

Your personal and financial circumstances are considered before a decision is made.  If you wish to claim a discretionary housing payment you can contact the Call Centre or visit the Public Advice and Service Centre for an application form. Details are listed on the right.

Please give us as much detail as you can in order for us to correctly consider your application for a discretionary housing payment as quickly as possible.  You should provide any documentary evidence which you feel may be relevant to your application - original documents will be required which we will return to you.  Failure to provide proof to support your claim within a reasonable time period could result in loss of payment.

You may be asked to provide additional information in order to support your claim.  We will contact you if this is required.

Please note that discretionary housing payments do not cover ineligible service charges such as lighting, heating, fuel, charges for water, sewerage and environmental services, or increases in rent due to rent arrears.
