Roads - maintenance

Our aim is to make the borough's highways, roads and pavements safe and convenient so that the public, visitors and emergency services can get around and goods can be transported efficiently.

Roads maintenance

 This is accomplished by:

  • responding to reports and complaints from the public
  • responding to emergencies caused by extreme weather conditions e.g. flooding or high winds.

On a daily basis we carry out routine work such as

  • cleaning
  • patching
  • resurfacing
  • gritting of roads in the winter months.

In addition we respond to emergency call outs (danger to life and limb) 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Following another severe winter in 2010/11 the government announced further funding of £200m for highway authorities in England.

Havering Council received grant funding of £322,509 from the Department of Transport (DfT) for additional road maintenance.

The money was spent on works in the roads listed below, where pre-patching of failed areas was carried out and then followed by resurfacing using micro asphalt. This resulted in halting the deterioration of these roads and has substantially prolonged the life span.

Chudleigh Road Nelmes Road Hall Lane
Lewes Road Hillview Avenue Warley Road
Aylsham Lane Hill Crescent Briscoe Road

This additional DfT funding has helped the Council carry out preventative maintenance which has avoided more costly maintenance in the future.

The Council's revenue budget for carriageway patching this financial year was £598,770 in addition to this funding there is an ongoing capital programme of carriageway resurfacing.

Potholes

Before you report a pothole please note that these will only be considered for repair if they are 40mm deep and 300mm wide in the carriageway and 25mm deep on the footway.

Please indicate the precise location of the pothole by telling us the following:

  • The name of the road or street.
  • The nearest house number or the closest landmark.
  • Is the pothole on the pavement or in the road?
