School - clothing grants and vouchers

From 1st April 2007, Secondary School Uniform Grants are available in very exceptional circumstances to families on low incomes. Receipt of a benefit alone will not qualify a claimant for assistance. Proof of exceptional circumstance and low income will be needed.


Secondary School Uniform Grants

This support will only be given in very exceptional circumstances.  A letter from an Education Welfare Officer or Social Worker must be supplied with the application form to confirm the individual exceptional circumstances of need.

Each case will be considered individually in line with the set criteria below:

  • Enforced re-housing and an associated move of school
  • Parent and children in a refuge necessitating a change of school
  • Enforced move of school through bullying
  • Exceptional circumstances requiring the replacement of a uniform e.g. fire damage

The grant in respect of each pupil eligible is currently £72 on each occasion.

In addition to the evidence from the Education Welfare Officer or Social Worker proof of Benefit will be needed:

  • Income Support or Income-Based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit, Pension Guarantee Credit or Working Tax Credit whose annual income as assessed by the Inland Revenue does not exceed the yearly level (Contact Student Finance for the current income level).
  • Or are being supported by the National Asylum Support Service (NASS) or are an Asylum Seeker being supported by the Local Authority Social Services Department.
