Licence - self drive boats

If you want to use a boat or other craft on the UK's rivers and canals, you are required to register, buy a licence, or pay a toll to the appropriate navigation authority for that waterway.

The London Borough of Havering does not regulate licensing in this area. It is the responsibility of the following three authorities:

  • British Waterways  runs almost all the canals, and rivers such as the Severn, Trent and Yorkshire Ouse.
  • The Environment Agency  runs the River Thames, the River Medway, and the rivers of East Anglia.
  • The Broads Authority  runs the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads.

Hire boats are licensed by the hire company, but you may want to use the boat on a waterway for which it is not licensed. If this is part of your plan you should consult the company first.

If you already know you need to pay for a British Waterways licence, an Environment Agency registration or a Broads Authority toll, you can now do this online at www.waterscape.com
