Abnormal loads

The movement of large or heavy loads is known as 'abnormal loads.' When hauliers wish to move loads which are classed as 'abnormal' (for example those with a gross weight exceeding 40 tonnes).

Bridge strengthening

The maximum permitted weight of lorries was increased in February 2001 to 44 tonnes. All bridges have had to be assessed to see if they could cope with this increase safely.

Cycle lanes and routes

Cycle Routes are principally indicated by signs and markings. They may be either on the carriageway, on footways either shared with or segregated from pedestrians, or specially designated cycle paths.

Demonstrations and parades

Sometimes, in special circumstances roads are closed to allow sporting events or parades to take place.

Red routes

The Red Route network in London consists of the main, strategic traffic routes.

Road adoption

The aim of this service is for the Council to take over the maintenance of a street built as part of a new development or where the street has been private historically. In other words, so that the street becomes maintainable at public expense.

Road junctions

The Council has a continuing programme of schemes to improve the safety and operation of the highway network. Many of these schemes originate from requests made by the public.

Road signs

The Council installs signs to regulate traffic and to provide warnings to drivers of hazards ahead.

Speed humps

The Council receives many requests from residents for these to be introduced in their roads to reduce speeds and improve safety.

Speed limits

Speed is a significant factor in about one third of road accidents in the United Kingdom. This is particularly so in urban areas, where speeding vehicles can adversely affect the quality of life of many communities.

Street name plates

The Council is responsible for ensuring that street name plates are provided and fitted in suitable positions.

The Council is responsible for installing and enforcing waiting and loading restrictions on the roads for which it is highway authority.
