Havering Council's plan to revive Romford Market has taken its next step by issuing all market traders with new covers for their stalls to replace the faded, torn and worn out covers that were a feature of market stalls.
The Council has invested £5,500 to provide the covers which are made of durable synthetics and are colour co-ordinated in green and white. They also provide better protection to the traders and shoppers from the elements.
The covers will improve the overall attractiveness and appeal of the 750 year old marketplace making it appear tidy and cleaner.
The canopies are part of a large plan to slowly regenerate the entire marketplace which has already been met with praise from traders and shoppers.
In September the Council launched a new layout of the market which provides clear access and walkways through the market, out of date public art structures were dismantled to remove clutter and a new arts and entertainment space in the north end of the market was launched last month.
Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Cllr Michael Armstrong said: "The regeneration of the marketplace is an ongoing programme which aims to restore the market to its former glory. We want to improve the look and feel of the market, increase footfall and make a visiting the market an enjoyable and exciting family event."
