A scheme run by Havering Council to encourage consumer confidence has approved its first car dealer.
Buy With Confidence helps members of the public find businesses they can trust. The scheme gives residents more reassurance that their hard earned cash will be well spent with approved traders – which is particularly important during the current recession.
Buy With Confidence has 24 members including heating installers, plumbers, electricians, glass door and window fitters, builders and alarm fitters.
Now Chris Willbourne Cars, in Front Lane, Cranham, has become the first motor dealer to be approved.
Mr Willbourne said: "We are very glad to be on board – we think it's a really good scheme and are delighted to be the first motor dealer in Havering to be part of it. We've been around for 27 years but it's always important to demonstrate to customers that you are a solid, trustworthy business."
Three other motor dealers are currently going through the approval process and the Council hopes more will sign up.
Buy With Confidence puts consumers in touch with traders approved by the Council's Trading Standards department who have agreed to provide high standards of customer service - including dealing promptly with any complaints.
In return, firms benefit from having their name on a list of recommended businesses that the Council will publish for consumers, an entry on websites, and use of the Buy With Confidence logo on marketing materials.
Cllr Peter Gardner, Cabinet Member for Trading Standards, said: "Buying a second hand car can sometimes be an expensive and anxious business and you want to know where you stand when you part with your cash. Buy With Confidence eases these worries. It's good for customers and good for business."
From January to October this year Havering Council received 118 complaints from residents about second hand cars – 17 more than the same period the previous year.
Businesses are welcome to attend a business breakfast at CEME, Rainham, on Thursday 26 November to find out more. To attend call 01708 433484. To request an application pack email BWC@Havering.gov.uk
