Elm Park Library

The newly rebuilt Elm Park Library opened on Monday 27 April. The new library is constructed on the site of the old prefabricated 1956 building and has been designed to be sustainable, energy efficient and a community asset. Tel: 01708 434919

The new Elm Park Library

This is the first public, low-carbon status building within Havering and the first time that Havering Council have been able to build a completely new library.

The single storey structure has a pitched sedum roof set.   Externally the library has been landscaped and enclosed on two sides by a brick wall.

The library consists of:

Glulam timber frame construction  - timber is a high quality raw material that can be continuously and sustainably produced from well managed forests and can make an active contribution to reducing the industry's CO2 emissions.

Sedum Roof - reduces storm water run off, provides wildlife habitat, can absorb some CO2, dust and other pollutants, protects roof materials from ultraviolet radiation and provides thermal and acoustic insulation.  It will attract birds and insects and even change colour with the seasons.

A 128 sq.m. solar monocrystalline photovoltaic system (solar panels) generating 16 KWp, is situated at the back of the roof light and on part of the south facing roof which should meet the needs of the annual electricity use for the building.

This project has been made possible with Partnership Funding from Veolia ES Cleanaway Havering Riverside Trust & The Low Carbon Building Programme – Phase 2

Recycled paper has been used to insulate the walls and double glazing will provide additional heat retention properties.

Under floor heating, supplied by an energy efficient condensing boiler, with an intelligent control system comprising room thermostats, weather compensation and optimum start control.

Energy efficiency lamps and fittings with automatic controls, time switches and occupancy sensor operated controls.

The new library was the winner of the 2008 Havering Business Awards for Sustainable Design and Construction.
