Many important architects of the early 1900's contributed to the Gidea park legacy we have today. Here they are in alphabetical order.
Charles Robert Ashbee, a prominent member of the Arts & Crafts Movement, Ashbee designed several houses in Chelsea, of which only 2 survive in Cheyne Walk. He also designed an estate for industrial workers at Ellesmere Port 1906-9. Founded the Guild of Handicraft which he moved in 1902 from East London to Chipping Camden in the Cotswolds. (b.1863, d.1942)
H Baillie Scott, famous on the continent as well as here for his small cottages and larger houses in a vernacular style (b.1865, d. 1945).
C M Crickmer, designed houses for the Hampstead Garden Suburb. (b.1879, d.1971)
W Curtis - Green, made a very significant contribution to the design of houses in the Hampstead Garden Suburb. Designed Dorchester Hotel 1950.
Edwin Gunn, designed houses for the Douglas Haig Memorial fund, some in Jutsums Lane, Romford.
Reginald Longden, designed buildings for the Garden City at Whitfield (Staffs) (1912).
Geoffrey Lucas, designed a number of houses for the Hampstead Garden Suburb.(b.1872, d.1947)
Fair & Val Myer, Val Myer designed Broadcasting House in Langham Place.
Bunney & Makins, of Letchworth Garden City designed many houses at the Hampstead Garden Suburb. Bunney (b.1873, d.1926)
Sir George Pepler, was a colleague of Unwin when founding the Town Planning Institute. (b.1882, d.1959)
Philip Tilden, designed many country houses, including Churt for Lloyd George. He rebuilt Chartwell for Churchill and Allington Castle for Lord Conway.(b.1887, d.1956)
Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, designed houses at the Hampstead Garden Suburb. They were also planners and chief architects for the Letchworth Garden City and Hampstead Garden Suburb. Unwin (later Sir Raymond) was the leading exponent of town planning and garden suburb ideas of his day. (b.1873 d. 1940). Parker (b.1867, d.1947).
Clough Williams - Ellis, designed Lloyd George's tomb and was responsible for Portmeirion. (b.1885, d.1978). Was knighted in 1972.
Ernest Willmott, designed houses at The Hampstead Garden Suburb (b.1871, d.1916)
Herbert Welch, did many designs for the Hampstead Garden suburb and lived there (b.1884, d.1953)
T. Milwood Wilson, designed houses at Hampstead Garden Suburb.
Young and Hall, designed the Royal Dental Hospital, Leicester Sq. (1899-1901).
