INSET 

We can provide school focused INSET for teachers, classroom assistants, non-teaching staff, parents and governors in the areas of:

Advice and consultancy 

Our team of experienced and professional librarians can offer advice, support and practical help in the following areas

• Library policy - to develop effective library provision
• Selection of relevant materials, revision and recommendations on developing existing library stock and resources
• Library design, refurbishment and reorganisation
• Funding and budgeting
• Information/study skills
• Pre OFSTED inspection
• Bibliographical information not necessarily linked with book purchase, e.g. Subject and recommended lists
• Computerisation

Project Loans 

Project loans may include books and other materials such as posters, picture packs and videos. Each collection is individually tailored to the age and ability range of its intended users and focused on supporting the requirements of the National Curriculum. The maximum number of items loaned per topic is eighteen. This is dependent, however, on the subject required, the age range of the children, current demand, length of notice and the availability of the material. They are supplied on a 'first come first served' basis. Individual projects can be kept for one term but can generally be renewed by phone if necessary. Lost and damaged items will be charged for.

NB the average cost of the materials in each of these boxes is approximately £200.

Book buying service 

SLS staff can buy stock on behalf of a school, working to an agreed specification or on receipt of a specific order. Most books provided by the Service are 'shelf-ready'. Books are supplied with plastic jackets, library stationery and a classification number on the spine of the book as necessary. Most books are costed at full price less 15%; other materials are full price. The SLS is also happy to accompany and help school staff on book buying visits to a library supplier or bookshop.

Delivery and collection service 

All projects are delivered and collected from school. This will usually happen at the beginning and end of term although it is possible to arrange this for half term also.

Inclusive Package 

• One advisory visit, on request, with an assessment report
• Seven hours of follow up work based on the assessment report ( extra time will be charged for)
• One hour per year of after school INSET for all staff following a library reorganisation
• One session per year, up to one hour, of school-based INSET for individual teachers or small groups of other members of the school community e.g. classroom assistants, parents, governors
• Access to the resource purchase scheme
• Unlimited access to project loan services
• Current awareness
• School Library Service input into special projects focusing on information skills
• Extra support for schools preparing for an OFSTED inspection or those in particular need
• Access to special resource exhibitions focused on specific aspects of the curriculum, booklists and bibliographical information not necessarily related to book purchase

• On a first come first served basis, information about and access to any centrally run courses

Cost is £8.40 per pupil + VAT

Advice and Consultancy/INSET

There is a basic charge of £66 per hour but individual work packages can be costed on request.

Please note that if a school nominates to take out a 3 year contract, prices will be held for the term of the contract and that invoices can be sent termly on request.
