Accessibility

Talking Website with 'Browsealoud'. After downloading and installing the free 'Browsealoud' speech browser, you can scroll your mouse over text on our site, and Browsealoud will read and speak what is written. Browsealoud has many other features aimed at making website navigation easier.

To download your free version of Browsealoud, click on the link on the right and follow the instructions. For more information, visit the Browsealoud website at www.browsealoud.com.

We aim to make it as easy as possible for you to access our information and get in touch. In this section you can find out what we have done to make the council and the information we provide more accessible to people with physical disabilities, visual impairments and hearing difficulties. You will also find information about initiatives to help disabled or less mobile people get around and access the services they need.

How to increase the text size on your browser

Internet explorer 7

Under the Page menu, there is the option Text Size.  You can change the size of the text from Largest to Smallest.  This will change your browser for every site you visit.  This will only change the size of the text.Under the Page menu, there is an option Zoom, this allows the entire page to be increased in size. You can pick a percentage from the list up to 1000% or enter your own value in Custom.Go to Tools, Internet Options and then click the Accessibility button.  This will allow you to change the colour and font of the pages you are viewing, as well as change the stylesheets.

Internet explorer 5 and 6

Under the View menu, there is the option Text Size.  You can change the size of the text from Largest to Smallest.  This will change your browser for every site you visit.Go to Tools, Internet Options and then click the Accessibility button.  This will allow you to change the colour and font of the pages you are viewing, as well as change the stylesheets.

Mozilla Firefox

Under the View menu, there is the option Text Size. 

You can also use CTRL + to increase the text size and CTRL - to decrease the text size.  CTRL 0 will return the text to normal.

Go to the View and click on Page Style.  Choose No Style.  To return to the page to normal, choose Basic Page Style.

Netscape 7

Under the View menu, there is the option Text Zoom. You can pick a value from the list from 50% to 200%, or enter your own value in Other.

You can also use CTRL + to increase the text size and CTRL - to decrease the text size. 

Netscape 4

Under the View menu there is the options Increase and Decrease font.

You can also use CTRL ] to increase the text size and CTRL [ to decrease the text size.

 Opera

You can also use CTRL + to increase the text size and CTRL - to decrease the text size. This will only change the size of the text.Under the View menu, there is the option Zoom.  You can use this to increase the size of everything on the page by picking a percentage from the list, up to a maximum of 200%

Note: To use these keys

For the Windows-based platform: if the browser is Netscape/Mozilla etc, hold down the 'Alt' key and press the assigned key on the keyboard; if the browser is Internet Explorer, do the same as for Netscape, but also press the 'enter' key to navigate to a page.

For the Macintosh platform, hold down the left-hand 'Control' and press the assigned key on the keyboard. (eg. Control-1 navigates to the home page.)

Read an Adobe PDF with Read Out Loud

The Read Out Loud feature in Adobe Acrobat, from version 6 onwards, reads aloud the text in a Portable Document Format (PDF) using the available voices installed on your computer.

You must activate Read Out Loud before you can use it. You can deactivate Read Out Loud when not required.

Whilst in Adobe Reader do one of the following:

  • Choose View > Read Out Loud > Activate Read Out Loud or press Shift+Ctrl+Y (Windows) or Shift+Command+Y (Mac OS).
  • Choose View > Read Out Loud > Deactivate Read Out Loud or press Shift+Ctrl+Y (Windows) or Shift+Command+Y (Mac OS).

Read a PDF with Read Out Loud

  1. Go to the PDF page that you want to read.    
  2. Do one of the following:    
    • Choose View > Read Out Loud > Read This Page Only or press Shift+Ctrl+V (Windows) or Shift+Command+V (Mac OS).
    • Choose View > Read Out Loud > Read To End Of Document or press Shift+Ctrl+B (Windows) or Shift+Command+B (Mac OS).

Note: Read Out Loud is not a screen reader, and some operating systems may not support it. For more information, visit the 'Webaim' website - link on right. You can download the latest version of Abobe Reader - see link on right.
