What is a Freedom Pass
A freedom Pass is a travel card, which allows free travel on all buses, trains and the Underground within London boroughs at certain times. The freedom pass gives free travel on most public transport in London. This includes buses, trains, trams, Tube and DLR services in London. It is paid for by the Council to help older and disabled people to get around. Freedom Pass holders also get a discount on many Thames River services
To qualify, you must be a permanent resident within a London borough and reach the criteria for the type of pass. There are two types of freedom pass - Elderly and Disabled.
Older Person's Freedom Pass
To qualify for an Elderly Person's Pass you must be 60 years of age. You can register your application at your local Post Office on or after your birthday. If this is a Sunday this can be done on the following Monday.
The procedure for issuing Older Person's Freedom Pass is as follows:
- Take proof of your name, age, address and one passport size photograph to the Post Office.
- Whilst there you have to complete an application form.
- The Post Office counter staff will perform all the relevant checks and give you a receipt.
- Your freedom pass will be sent to you by post within 10 working days of your registration at the Post Office.
Disabled Person's Freedom Pass
To qualify for a Disabled Person's Freedom Pass you must contact your relevant Social Work Team: Mental Health Team, Learning Disabilities Team, Physical & Sensory Team or Children with Disabilities Team. They will check your eligibility and provide you with an authorisation letter / form.
The procedure for issuing Disabled Person's Freedom Pass is as follows:
- Contact your relevant Social Work Team i.e. Mental Health Team, Learning Disabilities Team, Physical & Sensory Team or Children with Disabilities Team. They will check your eligibility and provide you with an authorisation letter / form.
- Take the authorisation letter / form together with proof of your name, age, address and one passport size photograph to the Post Office.
- The Post Office counter staff will perform all the relevant checks and give you a receipt.
- Your freedom pass will be sent to you by post within 10 working days of your registration at the Post Office.
