Where are the Conservation Areas?

Learn about Havering's Historic Areas

There are nine Conservation Areas in Havering. Select the area you are interested in for more information.

Corbets Tey Conservation Area

Definition of boundary:

1. The former grounds of Gaines Park comprising

(a) Parklands Open Space including Parklands Bridge Grade II Listed.

(b) Land north of

Harwood Hall Lane now forming part of the grounds of Harwood Hall.

(c) Corbets Tey School playing fields.

2. Harwood Hall, Grade II Listed and its curtilage.

3. The hamlet of Corbets Tey surrounding the junction of Corbets Tey Road, Ockendon Road and Harwood Hall Lane, extending to the boundaries of Nos 2-32 Sunnings Lane and following the boundary of the garden centre and associated land to the South.

Remaining Land

Gidea Park Railway Station Conservation Area Extension

The area lies to the east of Balgores of Balgores Lane railway bridge and north of Station Road. It has a width of 200 metres with a frontage to Station Road of about 80 metres. It extends northwards by some 70 metres to include all the railway station and platforms within the cutting, up to the southern boundary of the Gidea Park Conservation Area with which it is contiguous over a distance of about 160 metres. Its total area is about 1.3 ha (3.25 acres). The buildings include the following:

  1. The station booking office complex and adjoining buildings
  2. Four former coal shed buildings currently in commercial use fronting Station Lane
  3. Two platform waiting rooms and ancillary accommodation
  4. Pedestrian footbridge

Havering-Atte-Bower Conservation Area

Definition of Boundary

The western boundary follows the eastern side of Orange Tree Hill northwards to beyond Bower Farm Cottage and crosses the road to encompass the site of Havering Palace (now demolished), then crosses fields to include properties at the eastern end of Bower Farm Road then northward to include properties in North Road.

The northern boundary follows the curtilage of Ivy Holt and crosses North Road to include the curtilage of Elmwood.

The eastern boundary follows the rear gardens of properties along the eastern side of North Road and along the northern boundary of properties in Broxhill Road (which include the Round House) terminating at the Water Tower and finally dipping southwards to Bower Wood.

The buildings include:

  • Rose Cottage, Grade II Listed
  • Nos 1-5 The Green (Merrivale and Forge Cottage), Grade II Listed
  • Church of St John the Evangelist, Grade II Listed

  • Bower Farm Cottage, Grade II Listed
  • The Bower House, Grade I Listed

North Ockendon Conservation Area

The area comprises two hamlets and the fields between.

1. The Eastern hamlet comprises:

(a) The cluster of buildings surrounding the junction of Ockendon Road with Fen Lane

These include:

  • Russell Cottage, Grade II Listed
  • Kilbro (The Old Bakehouse) Grade II Listed
  • 7 Castle Cottages, Grade II Listed
  • 1-6 Castle Cottages
  • The Forge, Grade II Listed
  • Commercial buildings rear of The Forge
  • Roundmead
  • The Old White Horse Public House

(b) Whitepost Farm

The two hamlets are joined by a cart-track running East-West between Ockendon Road (South of the Old White Horse Public House) and Church Lane. The southern boundary of the area follows the southern boundary of Fields Nos. 2985, 1988 and 9984 and dips southwards to encompass the Grass Road South of Church Lane.

2. The Western hamlet flanks both sides of Church Lane and comprises:

(a) A cluster of buildings close to the junction of Church Lane with Ockendon Road.

These include:

  • 1-6 Church Lane
  • 1-2 Remembrance Cottages
  • 1-2 School Houses
  • Challenge Trust School
  • Reading Room Cottages

(b) A group of buildings close to the Church on the West Side of Church Lane.

These include:

  • 19th Century Barn
  • The Rectory, Grade II Listed
  • The Coach House
  • Church of St Mary Magdalene, Grade I Listed

(c) Hall Farm comprising the Grade II Listed walls to North Ockendon Hall (now demolished) its moat and a range of farm buildings, including three residential bungalows.

Rainham Conservation Area

Boundary Definition

Northern boundary of railway, River wall top northward from railway for 300 feet, Line from that point to bend in Rainham Creek, Eastern edge of Rainham Creek (high water mark of medium tides) to a point 200 feet north of bend, line from that point straight to north-west corner of curtilage of Bell Inn.

Curtilages of Bell Inn, 12-28 Broadway, 1-39 Upminster Road South. West boundary of 1-12 Parkway and 41 Upminster Road South. From south-west corner of 41 Upminster Road South in a straight line to south-west corner of curtilage of 37 Wennington Road to centre of Wennington Road.

St Leonards Conservation Area

The area lies on the South Side of Hornchurch Road and is surrounded by, but excludes Hornchurch Bus Garage and modern residential development in St Leonard's Way, Napier Close, Wallis Close and Landseer Close.

The area comprises the historic core of the former Cottage Homes of the Parish of St Leonard, Shoreditch and includes the following original Children's Home buildings comprising:

  • Rose House
  • Wallis House
  • Myrtle House

Cranham Conservation Area

Boundary Definition

  • Cranham Parish boundary abutting Argyle Gardens.
  • Northern boundary of St Mary's Lane (excluding residential property in Ashvale Gardens, Ashvale Drive and Westbury Terrace)
  • Southern boundary fields 7460, 8056, 0255, 2247, 3740, 4934, 6229.
  • Eastern boundary field 6229
  • Southern boundary field 6469

The area comprises a 'core' group of buildings clustered around the southern limit of The Chase, a gravel lane running south from St Mary's Lane.

The group includes:

  • Church of All Saints, Grade II Listed
  • Railed tomb to west of Church of All Saints, Grade II Listed
  • Cranham Hall, Grade II Listed
  • Garden walls at Cranham Hall, Grade II Listed
  • Cranham Farm including quadrangle of old farm buildings
  • Church Hall
  • The Rectory
  • 'Four Oaks'
  • Rectory Cottage

The remaining buildings within the area on the southern side of St Mary's Lane including:
