Havering kids get fiction masterclass

Young people from across the borough gathered last week to meet popular fiction writer Anne Cassidy, special adult guest for the fortnightly Teen Zone event led by Havering Libraries.

As Hornchurch Library is closed for refurbishment until next year, Teen Zone has taken up temporary home at the Robert Beard Youth Centre, Hornchurch.

Anne Cassidy, a popular writer most commonly known for her Point Crime novels, met budding young writers to discuss her work. She spoke about her writing inspirations, how she develops her ideas and revealed her tips on how to get published. She also answered questions from the attentive crowd.

Teen Zone is run by Lee De'arth and David Denison, two young and extremely capable members of the Havering Library Service who use their knowledge and experience to structure the event in line with what appeals to Havering young people. The fortnightly two hour sessions aim to challenge young people's perception of libraries being all about books - Teen Zone literally allows the teens to take over! They are keen for as many young people between the ages of 11 and 19 to come along and get involved in the activities.

Teen zone takes place every fortnight. The next session will be held on 22 May at the Robert Beard Youth Centre. Current activities include, free internet and PS2 access, an array of sports from basketball to table tennis and special guest visits which have included hair and beauty demonstrations by the Vanilla Rooms.
