Havering Music School

Havering Music School is the local authority music service for the borough.

Our 80 specialist instrumental and vocal tutors teach in nearly all secondary schools and in most primary schools in the borough. Lessons are available on most orchestral, band and contemporary instruments and voice. We offer rare instruments like oboe, bassoon, double bass and orchestral percussion.

We have nearly 1,000 instruments available to hire, so children can see whether it's for them without the cost of buying up front. As students progress they are able to take nationally recognised exams at our own centre.

At our Saturday and weekday Music Centres young people play together in ensembles, sing in choirs and take instrumental and vocal lessons. On Saturdays we can cater for infants to sixth formers and have recently started to offer brass lessons for adults. Our flagship ensembles, the Youth Orchestra and Youth Brass Band, rehearse on Wednesday evenings, along with others.

The Havering Junior Musician's Festival

An annual event with the support of generous sponsors, leading to the presentation of awards and certificates to successful participants at the Finalists’ Concert.

Havering Music School hosts two annual competitions. The Junior Musicians’ Festival event is held in the Summer Term, and recognising that it is a celebration of the musical talent of young people in the borough, it is now called Havering Junior Musicians' Festival.

It is for school age students, in two categories: Year 11 and under and Year 7 and under. Candidates in each class perform two pieces in an informal setting, in the presence of an invited mentor.

This event aims to encourage students to strive for their highest personal standards of technique and musicianship. Prizes are generously donated by local sponsors.
