What support is there for foster carers?

Havering foster carers are offered financial support as well as personal and social support.

If a foster carer is in receipt of benefits, they can still receive a fostering allowance which will not affect their benefits claim.

Financial support

Financial support includes:

  • a professional fee to recognise your skills and the work you do
  • an allowance to cover all the costs of caring for a child
  • furniture and equipment to meet the needs of a child
  • financial support to cover a child's birthday, Christmas, religious festivals and holidays

Personal support

The support for you as a foster carer includes:

  • individual support via your own social worker
  • access to a professional support team of teachers, social workers and health advisors
  • 24 hour telephone support
  • on-going training opportunities to develop skills and knowledge
  • a foster carers training programme
  • online training

Social support

We organise monthly support group meeting for all our foster carers, where we have social workers on hand to answer any queries or questions and who are able to offer advice and guidance.

It’s a great opportunity to meet other foster carers in a relaxed setting, who will be understand your new journey of fostering for Havering Council.

We are pleased to offer our Children in Care Council (CICC) which offers automatic enrolment for all looked after children.

They provide a safe environment for children to take part in positive activities where they are able to engage with professionals.

They also offer an after-school drop in club, where young people can meet and discuss personal issues and learn new skills that cover independent life skills and accredited courses.

Havering Council has its own Havering Foster Carers Association (HFCA) which is run by foster carers and offers support and guidance plus fun social events throughout the year for all foster carers.
