Havering to fly flag for Commonwealth Day

Published: Friday, 10 March 2017

The Mayor of Havering and dignitaries from the borough will be raising the flag to celebrate the Commonwealth this month.

Councillor Philippa Crowder, Mayor of Havering, said:

“The Commonwealth is a hugely important part of our culture.

“The theme this year is peace-building, and at a time of increasing instability and uncertainty in the world, the Commonwealth becomes an ever more-needed symbol of strength and hope.

“The Charter of the Commonwealth says that everyone is equal and deserves to be treated fairly, whether they are rich or poor, without regard to their race, age, gender, belief or other identity.

“I urge residents to join us to mark this annual event, when we raise the flag of the Commonwealth, especially on this, the year of her Majesty the Queen’s Sapphire Jubilee.”

The Commonwealth day event takes place on Monday 13 March, at the Town Hall, Main Road, Romford, RM1 3BB.   A message from Rt Hon Patricia Scotland QC, Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations will be read at 9.50am , followed by the Commonwealth Affirmation, before raising the flag at 10am.
