Families in Havering are invited on 24 and 25 January 2018 when Public Health England’s Change4Life roadshow comes to the Brewery shopping centre, to help families choose healthier snacks.

Change4Life is encouraging residents to use the new simple tip – ‘Look for 100 calorie snacks, two a day max!’

Children in England are eating nearly three times the recommended daily amount of sugar. In Havering, a fifth of five year olds have one or more decayed, missing or filled teeth, and more than a third of children are overweight by the time they leave primary school.  Less than half of fifteen year olds in the borough eat the recommended ‘5-a-day’. By replacing sugary snacks with fruit and vegetables would both decrease the amount of sugar, fat and salt consumed, and increase the intake of beneficial nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and fibre.

Councillor Wendy Brice-Thompson, Cabinet Member for Adults Services, said:

“Havering’s vision commits to helping families to make positive lifestyle choices, and pledges a good start for every child to reach their full potential.

“By attending the roadshow residents will see live demonstrations of the new updated Change4Life ‘Food Scanner’ app,  which helps bring labels to life and show you just how much sugar, salt and saturated fat is inside everyday snacks, foods and drinks. Trained staff will also be on hand to answer questions, help you to download the app and provide information on how you can make healthier choices.”

An The Change4Life roadshow will be visiting The Brewery in Romford from 10am-6pm on 24 and 25 January 2018.
