Havering A-level students buck national trend

Students in Havering have achieved outstanding results, with A-Level exam passes exceeding the national pass rate once again.

Havering students achieved an overall 99 percent pass rate, which is an increase in comparison to the national results.

Councillor Robert Benham, Cabinet Member for Children and Learning, said:

“A-level results day has been one of the most eagerly awaited dates for young people across Havering, as it allows them to plan for the next chapter in their lives.

“Today’s outstanding results show how hard work and dedication is rewarded. Many of our students will now be attending university, starting apprenticeships, beginning an adventurous gap year or joining the workforce. I wish them all every success.

“Today is also a great opportunity to thank all teachers and education staff for their continued dedication and efforts to support students to reach their goals.”

The Coopers' Company and Coborn School, Upminster, achieved an outstanding overall pass rate , with 29 percent of students achieving A*s and As, this is an increase from 26.7 percent last year.

Zijian Wei, 18, student from The Coopers Company and Coborn School, said:

“I am stunned and overwhelmed with my results, and I am so happy to have been accepted to the University of Oxford to study History.”

Dr David Parry, Head teacher, The Coopers' Company and Coborn School, said:

“I am delighted with the increase of our students achieving A* and A grades.  All of our students have worked incredibly hard to get these grades, and are truly focused”

Havering Sixth Form College, Hornchurch, achieved an overall pass rate of 96 percent, with 11 percent of students achieving A*s and As, both results are one percent increase against the 2016 A level results.

Jamal Purcell-Edwards 18, student at Havering sixth form College, said:

“I am so happy with my results, and achieved an A*, which means so much to me. I cannot wait to start at the University of Greenwich.”

Paul Wakeling, Principal, Havering 6th Form College, said:

“I am once again delighted to announce excellent outcomes for our students in 2017. Our overall A Level pass rate, passes at A* and A, high grades A*-B and A-C are all at their highest for the last three years.”
