Council Tax – checks on single person discounts
Council Tax payers in Havering who receive a 25 percent discount off their Council Tax as a single adult resident will soon be checked to make sure that the discount is correct.
The checks form part of the council’s measures to prevent and detect fraud and protect the public purse.
We are keen to ensure that single resident discounts are claimed by taxpayers who are genuinely entitled.
Taxpayers who currently claim the discount may get a single resident discount review letter and form with instructions to either return the paper form to the address specified or complete it online.

Capita Local Government Services has been appointed to carry out a comprehensive review. They will work with Equifax, the credit reference agency using up-to-the-minute, data-matching technology to identify where people are claiming discounts that they are not entitled to.
