Bleed kits save lives
In an emergency involving severe bleeding, every second counts.
Bleed kits are available at locations across Havering to provide members of the public with immediate access to life-saving equipment while emergency services are on their way.
If someone is suffering from a serious injury and heavy bleeding call 999 immediately
Always call 999 first. The emergency call handler will assess the situation and, where appropriate, direct you to the nearest bleed kit and guide you through how to use the equipment until paramedics arrive.
Bleed kits are designed to be used by members of the public in an emergency and contain equipment to help control catastrophic bleeding.
What is a bleed kit?
A bleed kit is a life-saving emergency kit containing specialist equipment designed to help stop or slow severe bleeding following a traumatic injury.
The kits may include:
- trauma dressings
- tourniquets
- protective gloves
- bleeding control materials
- simple instructions for emergency use
The equipment can help preserve life by controlling blood loss until professional medical assistance arrives.
When to use a bleed kit
Bleed kits should be used in emergencies where a person is experiencing severe or life-threatening bleeding, including:
- serious accidents
- knife-related injuries
- road traffic collisions
- industrial or workplace incidents
- any situation involving catastrophic blood loss
A 999 call handler will advise on the safest and most appropriate action to take.
Find a bleed kit
If a bleed kit is nearby, the 999 operator may direct you to its location and provide access instructions.
They will remain on the line and guide you through the process of using the equipment if required, some bleed kits may only be available during certain hours but the operators will be able to see this.
Never delay calling 999 in order to search for a bleed kit.
All secondary schools and colleges in the borough have a bleed kit located on site and accessible during opening hours.

The installation of bleed kits across Havering has been made possible through the joint efforts of Sue Hedges from the Ricky Hayden Memorial and the London Borough of Havering Community Safety Team.
