Register a birth
Limited appointments between 21 January and 2 February
There will be limited availability of birth registration appointments at Havering Register Office between Monday 21 January and Friday 2 February 2019. Additional appointments will take place at the Ingrebourne Children's Centre.
Congratulations on the new addition to your family, the information below explains what you need to do in order to register your baby's birth.
How soon can the birth be registered?
It is possible to register a baby as soon as the birth has taken place. A baby's birth must be registered within 42 days.
Where can I register my baby's birth?
Registration of the baby need not place in the district in which it was born. If your baby was born at Queens Hospital, Romford, or any address in Havering you can register using the following:

What documents are available at registration?
You will have the opportunity of purchasing a full long certificate at the cost of £4.00 each at registration.
If you require further copies you can also purchase these on the day at the same price of £4.00 however, if you don’t purchase at the time of registration the cost will increase.
Payment can be made by debit card.
Birth Certificate Wallet
You will also have the opportunity to purchase one of our new Animal Character Birth Wallets for £3.00. This is a lovely way to keep those important certificates safe and there is a space for you to include a photograph of your new arrival.
Information for the register
- the date and place of your baby's birth
- whether the baby is a boy or a girl
- the baby's forenames and surname
- forenames and surnames
- dates and places of birth
In addition, the mother alone is required to provide:
- the total number of previous children
- the date of marriage to the baby's father if applicable.
If the baby's parents are married either parent can attend on their own. Otherwise only the mother is qualified and if the father wishes to be his details to be included in the register he will need to attend with the mother. The father's details may also be added at a later date.
Re-registering a birth
Re-registrations are required when:
- the mother marries the biological father of the child after the birth was registered. Even if the father's details were originally entered in the birth register, and even if the child has the father's surname.
- the father's name was not on the birth certificate, but the mother now wants this added
