The next Mayor and London Assembly elections are on Thursday 2 May 2024

London has one Mayor and 25 Assembly Members

The Mayor’s job is to make London a better place for everyone who visits, lives or works in the city.

The London Assembly is made up of 25 Members - 11 represent the whole capital and 14 are elected by London’s constituencies.

Key dates to remember 

  • Thursday 14 March (2pm to 3pm) – Havering and Redbridge Constituency: Pre Nomination Briefing for prospective candidates and agents
  • Tuesday 19 March - Publication of Notice of Election
  • Wednesday 20 March to Wednesday 27 March (10am to 4pm) - Receipt of Nominations 
  • Thursday 21 March to Monday 1 April - Polling cards delivered
  • Wednesday 27 March (4pm) - Close of Nominations
  • Thursday 28 March - Publication of statement of persons (and parties) nominated
  • Tuesday 16 April - Deadline to register to vote (midnight)
  • Wednesday 17 April (5pm) - Deadline for the receipt of postal vote applications
  • Wednesday 24 April (5pm) - Deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate and deadline for the receipt of proxy vote applications
  • Friday 26 April - First day to issue replacement postal votes
  • Thursday 2 May (7am to 10pm) - Polling Day

Eligibility

To vote in the Mayor of London and London Assembly elections, you must:

  • be registered to vote
  • be 18 or over on the day of the election
  • be a British, Irish, qualifying Commonwealth or EU citizen
  • be a resident at an address in Greater London
  • not be legally excluded from voting

You can:

If you are voting in person, you must bring photo ID to vote.

If you do not have a form of acceptable voter ID, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) before 5pm on 24 April 2024.

How to complete your ballot papers 

Voting for the Mayor - pink ballot paper

Use the pink ballot paper to vote for Mayor of London. You have one choice. Mark a cross next the candidate of your choice. 

Voting for the London Assembly  

You have two votes for the London Assembly. 

London Assembly (constituency) Member - yellow ballot paper
  1. Use the yellow ballot paper to vote for your constituency London Assembly Member. 
  2. Mark a cross next the candidate of your choice.    
Assembly Member (London-wide) - orange ballot paper
  1. Use your orange ballot paper to vote for an Assembly Member to represent the whole of London.
  2. Mark a cross next the party or independent candidate of your choice. 

Information for candidates and election agents

Nominations

Standing for election for the Constituency Assembly Member

Candidates are required to submit the following to the Constituency Returning Officer (CRO):

  • a completed nomination and nomination consent form which must be obtained from the CRO responsible for the constituency where the candidate wants to stand
  • a deposit of £1,000 which is returned if the candidate gets more than five per cent of votes cast in that constituency
  • a certificate of authorisation from the registered political party’s nominating officer (if standing as the candidate for a political party)
  • a signed request to using a registered political party’s emblem on the ballot paper (if doing so)

Nomination papers must be delivered to the CRO, Town Hall, Main Road, Romford, RM1 3BD on any working day after the publication of the Notice of Election between 10am and 4pm (excluding bank holidays) but no later than 4pm on Wednesday, 27 March 2024.
