Havering hosts climate awareness event
Havering Council are inviting residents to a Havering Climate Challenge Awareness Day event on Saturday 6 November (9am – 5pm) at Romford Market Place.
The free climate awareness event coincides with COP 26– the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow where up to 200 world leaders will come together with business to address global climate change.
The Havering Climate Challenge Awareness Day event will feature of a variety of stalls designed to provide information on the small changes that can be made by individuals and families to tackle climate change and reduce our carbon emissions.
The small steps being supported at the event include walking and cycling more, reducing waste, or cutting energy use.
These may seem like small actions, but if we all act together, they can make a big difference.
The Council environmental services, local businesses and community groups will all be providing valuable climate change related information and demonstrations at the event.
Highlights include Friends of the Earth providing advice on how to make your garden more biodiverse, recipes from the Co-op Pioneers and demonstrations with the Community Chef to make the most of any leftover food.
Lexus Woodford will also be showcasing their new Lexus UX electric vehicle.
Cyclists or those wanting to cycle more, will be able to see Dr. Bike, who will be offering free bike repairs and maintenance advice.
Additionally, two dedicated cycling stalls will be providing insight on cycle paths, cycling groups and training.
Councillor Damian White, the Leader of Havering Council, said:
“With the launch of COP 26 we want to keep having the important conversation on climate change and this Havering Climate Challenge event is a great opportunity to do just that.
“We’ve made a commitment to be net carbon neutral by 2040 or before, and the event demonstrates that we all have a role to play in supporting this commitment.
“We are currently reviewing everything the Council does and will publish a climate action plan next month on how we will meet that commitment.
“It’s been really encouraging to see local business and community groups joining us as we continue to raise awareness of climate change.
"I thank them for supporting the event and look forward to joining them on the day.
“It is vital to me that making meaningful change locally to battle climate change is something everyone has a stake in and that many of those steps are affordable for all.”
