Christmas Boxes

Christmas has come early for dozens of residents in need of some extra help over the festive period, after receiving Christmas gift boxes from Havering Council’s Community Hub in Harold Hill.

The Christmas boxes, each consisting of quality fresh and non-perishable foods, toys and toiletries, has been supported by Peabody and generous donations from Wates, Madigan Gill, Time FM and local businesses.

In its first Christmas since opening earlier this year, the Harold Hill Community Hub is a partnership between Havering Council and Peabody which works with a wide range of partners, including the voluntary and community sector.

Projects like the Harold Hill Community Hub are part of the new way the Council are making it easier for residents to access local services and get support.

The Harold Hill Community Hub includes an on-site community food shop, open to all, for a small weekly membership fee of £5, where its members can choose a variety of non-perishable, chilled and frozen foods.

These items are of much greater value than the weekly membership fee, so will help to reduce weekly shopping bills. To date the community food shop has distributed over £17,000 worth of food and avoided over five tons of food waste.

Services at the hub are due to expand, with projects like regular community coffee mornings planned for the next year.

Councillor Viddy Persaud, Cabinet Member for Public Protection and Safety, said:

“We are grateful for the generous donations from businesses who are helping Harold Hill Community Hub deliver this much-needed support to families and individuals.”

“Many families and individuals in our community are going through difficult times, especially in light of the pandemic, and we know Christmas can be an especially challenging.”
