Progress continues on Rainham Leisure Centre construction

Rainham Leisure Centre received the final piece of its external structure at a traditional topping out ceremony on Tuesday 31 January 2023.

Cabinet members and local ward members, including the Leader, Cllr Ray Morgon, joined Tom Fletcher, Area Contract Manager, Everyone Active and Adrian Turner, Director of ReCreation, who are managing the design and build of the new facility, to oversee progress.

The topping out ceremony on site, where works began in January 2022, represents a significant milestone in the construction process.

With the steel frame and roof now firmly installed, the next steps will be to complete the external decor, as well as the tiling, before the centre opens its doors later this year.

The new centre is being built using a modern design structure and will include a range of facilities such as a six-lane swimming pool, dance and spinning studio and a 72-station fitness suite.

It is on target to be completed and handed over to Everyone Active, the company that runs the leisure centres in the borough, this summer.

The Rainham Leisure Centre build bucks a national trend that has seen local leisure facilities come under pressure due to rising energy costs and lack of investment in infrastructure.

The Leader of Havering Council, Councillor Ray Morgon, said:

"Seeing the extensive progress on site is really positive, as this will be a fantastic new facility not only for the community in Rainham, but for the whole borough.

“We’re proud that unlike many other councils, we’ve been able to invest in our leisure centres, which are very important to both our physical and mental health.

“It will be an asset to the local community, not just as a place for people to stay healthy through exercise but also somewhere for people of all ages to meet and socialise.”

Tom Fletcher, Area Contract Manager at Everyone Active, said:

“This continued investment from the Council will ensure we can enhance our leisure offering and continue to engage people from all backgrounds in physical activity.

“We will continue to work hard with Havering Council and our build partners to ensure that construction is completed to the highest quality and remains on schedule.

"We look forward to seeing this site improve the lives and wellbeing of people in Havering.”
