Council launches project to restore Hitchin Green
Work has begun on the restoration of Hitchin Green in Harold Hill, which will create an open green space for local residents and visitors.
The work includes cutting back overgrowth, shrubs and bushes, and picking up litter and waste.
The area is also home to a weir, which runs through the green and under the housing estate.
As part of the project, contractors will be clearing the weir of any rubbish and overgrown vegetation, helping to keep the water flowing and to avoid flooding.
New flowerbeds and waste bins will be installed along the footpath, encouraging residents to keep the green clean and tidy.
Finally, a new fence and entrance archway is being constructed, which will run along the Noak Hill Road entrance, to welcome visitors to the new Hitchin Green.
The archway will be officially opened on Friday 19 May 2023.
The project is being carried out by Havering’s contractors Mears and K&T Heating, alongside council services and local volunteers.
This is part of the Council’s commitment to social value, giving residents a more welcoming and safe space to enjoy.
Members of the Harold Hill Wombles led by Michelle Squier have also agreed to volunteer their time to help with the project.
Councillor Paul McGeary, Cabinet Member for Housing, said:
"I’m thrilled that we have been able to get this project off the ground. Hitchin Green is such a wonderful space and it is finally getting the attention it deserves.
“I’d like to thank the staff at Mears and K&T for their support on the project so far, as well as the Harold Hill Wombles, local councillors Kathy Tumilty and Pat Brown and anybody else who decides to join us for the volunteer week.
“We want to make sure that our public spaces are clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone in the community.
"Hopefully these improvements will encourage more people to enjoy this beautiful new green.”
The team is holding a volunteer week between Monday 15 and Thursday 18 May for any residents that want to come along and help with the clean-up.
