Volunteers needed to help local children and families

Havering Council is looking for dedicated volunteers to support young people and their families.

The Early Help Service is seeking volunteers who are passionate and enthusiastic about children’s play and activity, to support the Council’s children’s centres, to become family coaches or young people’s mentors.

Potential volunteers can find out more at two information events being held at Collier Row Children’s Centre on Monday, 19 June 2023, 6pm to 8pm and Wednesday, 21 June 2023 from 12noon to 2pm.

The events will provide the opportunity to find out more about the roles and the training programme and to meet some of the volunteers already supporting children, young people and families in Havering.

Volunteers for the children’s centre activity group will help the team to plan play activities to encourage learning and to develop social and physical skills, supervise activities and signpost parents and carers to other local services.

Family coaches will provide support to families already receiving help to become more independent in the future and they could be dealing with issues such as budgeting, parenting, ill health, emotional support or moving on from domestic abuse.

Young people’s mentors offer vital one-to-one advice and guidance to a young person to help them reach their potential and make positive changes in their lives.

Councillor Oscar Ford, Havering’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said:

“We’re looking for a variety of people who can support a child or family at a crucial stage in their lives.

"We already have some amazing volunteers and we’re looking to increase the number.

“Having someone to come alongside young people and families who need some extra support is absolutely invaluable.

"It helps them to build up their confidence so that they can become more independent and improve their current situation.”
