Students from New City College, Rainham, have recently participated in work experience opportunities at the Family Welcome Centre construction site, with the Council’s construction partner, Bugler.
Two young people who recently attended are Eva Parker and Billy Nell, both Level 1 Bricklaying students.
Throughout the week, they took part in site walks, observing the daily operations, safety protocols and project progression.
The team took time to teach them about key elements of brickwork and construction processes, and they made the most of the opportunity to ask questions and build on their existing knowledge.
Eva said:
“My time at the Family Welcome Centre site has been incredibly rewarding.
“I’ve learned so much about the construction industry and have gained practical experience that I know will be invaluable as I pursue my career.
“The team has been supportive and encouraging, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such knowledgeable professionals.”
Billy added:
“It was a really enjoyable week.
“The team created a dedicated area for me to practice my bricklaying skills, and I got to work with standard bricks, engineering bricks and block work and had to follow construction drawings to give me a realistic task environment.
“I was presented with a trowel by the site team at the end of my placement.”
Ged Xidhas, Project Manager for Bugler, said:
“All our work experience students have shown a genuine interest in all aspects of the work, quickly integrating into site life and taking every opportunity to get stuck in.
“We are committed to fostering strong community relationships and supporting the educational development of local students.”
Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said:
“I am pleased to see Bugler’s social value commitment in action to support local students.
“It proves once again that the regeneration we are undertaking is not just about building homes, it’s about building futures.”
This follows the team’s attendance at Draper’s Academy Year 9 Careers Week in late April, where they also spoke to students interested in first-hand exposure to various career paths, providing valuable insights into the construction industry.
The Family Welcome Centre is scheduled to open in Spring 2026.
