Havering Council has moved forward on its work at revitalising Romford Market Place by hosting a Stakeholder Design Workshop on Monday 14 July 2025.
This initiative follows the recent adoption of the Romford Town Centre Masterplan in March 2025, which seeks to enhance the Market Place both as a vibrant setting for Romford Market and as a key public space for the wider town centre.
The Council is currently in the early stages of planning and has no fixed design proposals, allowing early engagement with a diverse range of stakeholders to gather their views and perspectives that will help to shape a shared vision for the Market Place.
Guests invited included local ward councillors, council and market trader representatives, as well as delegates from the Greater London Authority (GLA), Transport for London (TfL), Historic England, Metropolitan Police, Romford BID, Brewery, Liberty, Mercury Mall, Romford Shopping Hall, St Edwards Church, and the charity and volunteer sectors.
This vision will guide the phased implementation of the project. Maccreanor Lavington Architect and Urban Logik project managers, who also worked on the Romford Masterplan project, facilitated the stakeholder meeting.
The design workshop will also assist the Council in determining how the Community Infrastructure Levy investment might be used to support this and other works in the borough. The Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) allows local authorities to help fund infrastructure by issuing a financial charge on new developments in their area where these are liable for CIL.
Councillor Graham Williamson, Cabinet Lead for Development and Regeneration, said:
“We have said all along that we will look to revitalise Romford Market Place.
"This meeting is the next crucial part of the process where we will look at how we can preserve our town’s heritage while creating a dynamic and welcoming space for all residents and visitors.
“We look forward to making the promise a reality working together with others to bring this vision to life.”
The stakeholder comments from the recent Design Workshop input will be used to refine more detailed design proposals for Market Place by the autumn, at which point public consultation will follow.
