Residents were given practical advice on saving energy and reducing household bills at a free drop-in event at Havering’s new Low Energy Visitor Centre in Raphael Park on Thursday 17 July 2025.

The event brought together Havering’s Waste and Recycling Team and Energy Doctors, a scheme delivered in partnership with Age UK.

The scheme provides free home visits offering tailored advice and installing small measures such as LED bulbs, radiator panels, and draught-proofing.

All residents can access the service, with no means testing required.

The event drew strong local interest, with residents learning how to make their homes more energy efficient through simple changes - from switching off standby appliances to accessing energy-saving grants.

The first 50 visitors also received free wildflower seeds to take home.

Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said:

“With energy bills still a concern for many, we’re taking action to provide residents with the right support.

The Energy Doctors are helping people make simple changes that lead to real savings and the Low Energy Visitor Centre gives everyone a space to learn more about cutting costs and living more sustainably.”

“This is just one initiative from a wealth of support out there as part of our Havering Helps campaign to help residents combat the high cost of living.”

Since launching in August 2024, the Energy Doctors have visited 65 individual households across Havering, helping residents save an estimated £8,148 annually which is an average of £140 per household.

The service has also reached all council-run sheltered housing schemes, provided advice and carried out minor energy-saving works.

This has supported 247 residents and delivered a further £8,349 in combined annual savings which is around £34 per household.

More events are planned at the Low Energy Visitor Centre over the summer, offering drop-in sessions on energy saving, waste reduction, and sustainable living.
