The formal dedication of the Ongar Way Village Green took place on Saturday 2 August 2025.

The long-cherished green space, originally designated in 1970, was celebrated as part of the borough’s ongoing commitment to preserving valuable public green spaces.

This dedication marks the third of five new village greens for 2025, to join the five much-loved open spaces that were dedicated last year, including Fleet Close, Hitchin Close, Wennington Village Green, Dover’s and Gooshays Green.

It forms part of Havering Council’s initiative to protect and enhance local green spaces for community use, and for future generations.

Residents, Leader of the Council Ray Morgon, and South Hornchurch ward Councillors Natasha Summers and Graham Williamson, attended the dedication event.

Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said:

“The dedication of Ongar Way, also known locally as Newton’s Corner, is a testament to our borough’s dedication to safeguarding community green spaces.

“These areas are not just patches of grass, they are the heart of our communities and support wellbeing and a sense of belonging.”

Ongar Way Village Green joins Platford and Tyle Green, and Priory Green, dedicated in July, with Reed Pond Walk Copse and Havering-atte-Bower dedications to follow.
