Hundreds of local children are receiving healthy food this summer thanks to a initiative by the Havering Food Alliance – supported by the Council, volunteers, schools and community groups.

The Pantry Pack Project helps ensure children don’t go hungry during the break by providing families with nutritious weekly food parcels, including breakfast items, fresh fruit and veg, and easy-to-follow recipes.

Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said:

"No child should go hungry during the holidays - and it’s inspiring to see so many residents stepping forward to support others.

"This is Havering at its best – neighbours helping neighbours, and people coming together to do the right thing.

"The Havering Food Alliance is already showing what’s possible when we work together – and we’ll continue building on this progress to create a stronger, more resilient food system that supports everyone in our borough."

The project builds on the launch of the Havering Food Alliance in June – a borough-wide partnership of charities, businesses, schools, and public sector organisations working together to tackle food insecurity.

Pantry Packs are delivered each week to local schools and community hubs, including Rainham Food Pantry.

Tony Lowe, Chief Executive of Tapestry, which coordinates the Alliance, said:

"This project is a real testament to the power of partnership and local action.

"It simply wouldn’t be possible without the incredible volunteers who give their time and energy each week to support others in their community."

Each Pantry Pack includes ingredients to prepare balanced meals and snacks – such as wholegrain pasta, tinned vegetables, breakfast cereal and fresh fruit.

Recipe cards are also included to help families make the most of the items while promoting healthy, budget-friendly cooking.

As demand continues, the Alliance is calling for more volunteers, food donations and financial support to keep the programme going. Just £15 helps feed a child for a week.
