Havering Council has joined forces with Connect Kerb to provide a number of EV charging points across Council-owned car parks and on-street parking bays.

In recent years the Council has adopted a Climate Change Action Plan, with the aim of Havering becoming a Carbon Neutral Authority by 2040 or sooner.

This action plan identified a number of initiatives to support this aim, including the delivery of Electric Vehicle Charging Points both in our Council-owned car parks and on street parking to support residents who do not have driveways.

It means that residents who have electric or hybrid vehicles, or are looking to purchase one in the future, have a wider opportunity to safely and conveniently charge their vehicles.

Also, as part of its flagship campaign, Where We Live, the Council is asking residents to work alongside it.

To help  make the borough greener and more sustainable and this project will help towards that goal.

By expanding EV charging points across Council car parks and on-street parking facilities in Havering, there will be more smart, affordable and accessible ways for residents to make the switch over and be happier and confident, if they choose to do so.

Each unit can charge two vehicles.

To fund the project, the Council has been successful in receiving external funding from the Government.

It received over £345k from the Office of Zero Emission Vehicles, to install publicly available Electric Vehicle Charging Points across the borough.

61 Charging Points are in the process of being installed in Council operated car parks across Havering.

A further 48 are being installed in residential streets across the borough.

Connected Kerb Ltd is also financially supporting the project and will manage the charging units for a period of 15 years.

It will also be responsible for the on-going maintenance and operation of the charging point infrastructure over that period.

Councillor Barry Mugglestone, Havering’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said:

“We are pleased to see the roll-out of the EV charging points in our Council-owned car parks and on-street parking bays.

“This will provide our residents who have electric or hybrid vehicles, or are looking to purchase one in the future, to have a wider opportunity to safely and conveniently charge their vehicles.

“We are also pleased to be working with Connect Kerb for this project. Not only are they helping to fund it, but they will also manage the charging units for a period of 15 years.

“They will also be responsible for the on-going maintenance and operation of the charging point infrastructure over that period.

"Many of the chargers are made from recycled materials which fits in with our own environmental goals. “

Ryan Spillance, Director of Sales and Partnership, Connect Kerb, said:

“We’re delighted to be working with Havering Council as we roll-out the EV charging points across the borough.

“The core aim of the project is to install accessible, reliable and affordable charging infrastructure.

“This is enabled by our smart charging feature within our app, which allows drivers to plug in earlier in the evening but schedule their charge to later in the evening to take benefit of the lower cost of energy.”
