Havering Council continues its journey toward a greener, more sustainable future, with nine corporate sites now operating live Solar PV systems.

These installations are already delivering significant environmental and financial benefits, with more to follow.

The sites, ranging from libraries, community centres and the Town Hall, are now connected to the Passive Web Portal, which provides real-time data on electricity generation, cost savings and carbon offset.

The anticipated annual generation capacity across all sites is 274,145 kWh, translating to an estimated saving of £76,000 and a projected carbon offset of 175 tonnes by the end of the current year.

That’s the equivalent electricity consumption of about 100 Homes (average electricity consumption about 2,700 Kwh/Year)

Among the sites currently benefiting from solar energy are:

  • Avelon Centre
  • Yew Tree Centre
  • Hornchurch Library
  • Rainham Library
  • Town Hall, Romford
  • MyPlace
  • Central Library
  • Bedford’s Park Depot
  • Harold Hill Library

Further enhancements are underway, including:

  • a 60 KW system planned for the central depot
  • an upgrade and expansion of the Romford Town Hall system to 90 kW

Once these projects are completed, the Council expects to save approximately £100,000 annually, depending on pricing and system performance.

Councillor Natasha Summers, Cabinet Lead for Climate Change and Housing Need, said:

“This is a fantastic step forward in our commitment to tackling climate change and reducing our carbon footprint.

“By investing in solar energy across our estate, we’re not only cutting emissions but also saving money.

“These projects support our wider environmental aims and demonstrate how local government can lead by example in the transition to a low-carbon future.”

The Council’s ongoing investment in renewable energy is part of its broader Climate Change Action Plan.
