The Leader of Havering Council has welcomed Transport for London’s (TfL) announcement that Hornchurch station has been selected to proceed to the next stage of Transport for London’s Step-Free Access

This means that full feasibility studies will now be carried out, marking a significant step closer to making Hornchurch station accessible for all.

Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said:

“I am delighted to welcome the announcement from the Mayor of London.

“This is a direct result of our continued lobbying for better transport infrastructure across Havering.

"We have consistently made the case for investment in our borough, not just for step-free access but for wider improvements to public transport.

"Only last month, we celebrated the confirmation of the new Superloop SL12 route, which will provide vital north-south connections and better link our communities with key employment and growth areas.

“We know how important accessible transport is for our residents, especially those with mobility needs, parents with pushchairs, and older people.

"The Mayor’s announcement makes clear that Hornchurch was chosen for its potential to reduce journey times for those needing step-free access, to address gaps in the network, and to support local regeneration.

"We will continue to work closely with TfL to identify opportunities for third-party funding and to ensure this project is delivered as soon as possible.

“This positive news comes at a time when many in Havering are experiencing significant disruption due to the ongoing works at Gallows Corner.

"We fully appreciate the frustration this is causing, and have been pressing TfL and partners for clear timelines and mitigation measures.

"While these works are essential for the long-term safety and resilience of our road network, this week’s announcement on Hornchurch station will, I hope, offer at least some consolation to local residents.

“Our Administration remains committed to securing further improvements to transport across Havering, whether it’s step-free access, new bus routes, or major upgrades.

"We will not stop campaigning until our borough has the modern, accessible, and reliable transport network our residents deserve.”
