A heartfelt story of resilience, community spirit and business success continues, following Paul Perfect’s 2024 Havering Small Business Awards win.

Paul, a local plumber and heating engineer, won the Best Tradesperson Award at last year’s awards.

Born and raised in Collier Row, the winner – a third-generation local Havering resident – Paul shared his emotional journey and business ethics with the Havering Small Business Awards team.

Raised by his father alongside his sister after their mother left at a young age, Paul knows first-hand the challenges of financial and emotional hardship.

“Growing up in Collier Row, all my childhood memories are rooted here,” he said.

“Winning the Havering Small Business Award ‘Best Tradesperson’ last year meant everything to me.

To be recognised by the very community that shaped me – it was humbling, emotional, and truly amazing.”

With over 35 years of experience in plumbing and heating, the award marked the pinnacle of a long and dedicated career so far.

“It’s not just about pipes and boilers – it’s about people.

“As a family-run business, me and my team go above and beyond to support those in need.

“Whether it is a single parent or an elderly resident struggling to make ends meet, we often waive our fees, asking only for a small donation to Saint Francis Hospice.

“In the past four to five years, we’ve donated over 100 jobs to the hospice,” he shared.

“My phone is on 24/7, and I respond to all local calls – Collier Row, Rise Park, Gidea Park – because this is my community.”

Speaking about the impact winning the awards last year has had, Paul said:

“Since winning, the business has grown, allowing me to hire an additional plumber and our first apprentice – both from Collier Row.

“It was important to me to give back. By hiring locally, we’re not just growing our business – we’re strengthening our community.”

His advice to the 2025 winners? “Help your community.

Cut costs where you can to support those in crisis. And sometimes, perhaps don’t charge the OAPs – a smile on someone’s face is worth more than any money.”

Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said:

“Paul’s story is one that will deeply resonate with our community – a local resident that continues to work hard to help his customers, our residents.

“It is a shining example of how local businesses not only provide essential services but also uplift and support the community around them, as well as the importance of shopping locally #KeepItLocalHavering

“We are so pleased that the Havering Small Business Awards shines a spotlight on our Havering businesses.

"Paul, and hardworking business owners just like him, show the very best that Havering has to offer.”
