Construction and Built Environment students from New City College visited the construction site of the Family Welcome Centre in Harold Hill earlier today (Thursday 23 October 2025).

It was an opportunity to gain valuable insight into the building project that will soon provide vital support to families across Havering.

The visit was part of a collaborative initiative between Havering Council and Bugler Developments, aimed at inspiring the next generation of skilled tradespeople by offering real-world learning opportunities.

Students were given a tour of the site, met with project managers, and learned about the technical and social impact of the development.

The Family Welcome Centre, set to open in spring 2026, will offer 74 self-contained dwellings for families in need, replacing outdated hostel accommodation with modern, secure living spaces.

Students said:

“The visit was extremely informative. I was able to ask questions and build my knowledge on what really goes on onsite. They made us all feel really comfortable, we were all able to understand what happens”- Kayla

“The visit was 10/10. I really enjoyed walking around the site and learning and what purpose everything serves. The managers were very proactive and encouraged asking questions. They were very focused on our safety and providing advice”- Nayara

“I enjoyed my time with Bugler, the workers were all very friendly and were patient with our questions. Would recommend, I have learnt lots today.” – Jack

Councillor Paul McGeary, Cabinet Lead for Housing and Property and Gooshays Ward Councillor, said:

“It was fantastic to welcome the students from New City College to the site.

“This project is not only about building homes—it’s about building futures. I would like to thank colleagues at Bugler for their on-going commitment to engaging young people in the construction process.

“Their work-experience opportunities for bricklaying and electrical students fosters local talent and ensures our borough continues to thrive with skilled professionals who care about their community.”
