This week, Havering’s #ChristmasMeansCommunity campaign has continued to spread festive cheer and strengthen community bonds through a series of heart-warming activities.
One of the highlights was the Toy Drive, organised by the Resident Engagement Team, which saw generous donations from residents determined to make Christmas special for local children who will be in hospital this Christmas.
Among those who contributed was James, a Havering resident, who shared his personal motivation:
“I spent Christmas in hospital as a child, and I know how hard that can be. I wanted to do something nice for kids who might be going through a tough time this year.”
The Toy Drive is just one example of how residents are coming together to support one another during the festive season, reinforcing the campaign’s message that Christmas is about community spirit and kindness.
The team also hosted an isolation event to support older residents and Brunswick Court health roadshow.
If you would still like to donate, today is the final day. Please contact getinvolved@havering.gov.uk
The Team have also delivered 55 advent calendars to Women’s Aid Havering , kindly donated by our repairs contractor, Mears, and 17 families (totalling 75 hostel residents) have attended the Queens Theatre Christmas Panto, thanks to the HAF funding.
Community spirit in Havering isn’t just about festive generosity - it’s also about residents having a voice in shaping the services that matter to them.
The Resident Participation Panel (RPP), which met last week, was established by Havering Council in 2016 and is a prime example of this collaboration in action.
The RPP brings together 20 tenants and leaseholders from across the borough, all trained in tenant engagement, to provide a structured, resident-led forum that influences decision-making and service delivery.
Through dedicated sessions, the panel offers strategic oversight, reviews performance, helps shape policy, and contributes to service improvements.
Recent contributions include vital input into the Housing Allocations Policy, the Estate Strategy, and guiding the approach to resident inspections.
By fostering meaningful dialogue and collaborative problem-solving, the RPP ensures housing services reflect the needs and priorities of the community - making Havering not just a place to live, but a place where residents feel heard and valued.
If you would like to join or find out more information about the Resident Participation Panel email the team.
Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said:
“The #ChristmasMeansCommunity campaign shows the incredible generosity and compassion of Havering residents.
“Initiatives like the Toy Drive make a real difference to families and children who need extra support at this time of year.
“We’re proud to work alongside the Resident Participation Panel and our communities to create a borough where everyone feels connected and cared for.”
This week’s #ChristmasMeansCommunity activities will include arts activities hosted by Fairkytes at two hostels in Havering and a sheltered housing Christmas quiz.
Other highlights for Christmas week are the West Ham United Foundation mixed football tournament at Power League and breakfast with Santa event for children and families experiencing homelessness.
We’re also asking Havering to tell us your favourite Christmas song, tradition or recipe, as well as if there’s someone important to you that you would like to thank this festive season.
