Havering Council has confirmed that work will start on site at Albert Road in early February 2026.
This marks a key milestone in the borough’s regeneration programme and regeneration of the locally listed building.
The development includes nine residential houses, including one two bedroom house and eight, three bedroom family homes, which will protect the historic core of the building, erected in the late 1800s.
It includes retaining and refurbishing the main historic building with partial demolition to create four houses, and a further five new houses to the rear of the property, as well as the preservation of the 1883 school dedication plaque.
Cllr Graham Williamson, Cabinet Lead for Development and Regeneration, said:
“Breaking ground at Albert Road is a big step forward for Havering.
“This project will deliver high-quality homes through Mercury Land Holdings.
“We’re excited to see work underway and will keep residents updated throughout.”
Christopher Hobbs, Director, Mercury Land Holdings, added;
"MLH is pleased to be bringing forward and preserving the historic building but also creating much needed family homes in Romford."
