This week marks National Hoarding Awareness Week (from 11 May 2026), shining a light on hoarding behaviours and the support available to residents across Havering.

Havering Council, working with partners such as the London Fire Brigade, is using the week to raise awareness of hoarding as a complex issue that can affect health, safety and wellbeing.

The Council’s dedicated hoarding officer is currently supporting more than 40 active cases across the borough, highlighting both the scale and complexity of the issue locally.

Addressing hoarding is not a one-off intervention; even once properties are made safe, residents often need ongoing, tailored support to help manage underlying challenges such as mental health, physical health, and social isolation.

Continued engagement is essential to help residents maintain progress and prevent situations from escalating again.

Information leaflets and advice will also be available in libraries across the borough, including Romford, Rainham, Harold Hill, Elm Park and Upminster, making it easier for residents and their families to manage and overcome hoarding behaviours in a safe, supportive way.

Residents concerned about hoarding - either for themselves or someone they know - are encouraged to seek help early.
