Havering Council is tackling the impact of the ongoing heatwaves and prolonged dry weather on the lake at Langton's Gardens.
Due to the prolonged heat, falling water levels are creating challenging conditions for wildlife.
The lake relies entirely on groundwater and surface run-off and does not have a natural water source such as a spring or stream.
We are working with partners to look at how we can increase the amount of water in the lake but continued hot weather and evaporation are placing further pressure on water levels.
The Council is continuing to monitor the situation closely and, following advice from the Environment Agency, contractors will shortly attend the site to remove the fish safely.
Councillor Keith Prince AM, Leader of Havering Council, said:
“We know how much Langtons Gardens means to residents and understand the concern about the lake and the wildlife it supports.
Following guidance from the Environment Agency, contractors will be removing the fish so they can be protected as safely as possible during these difficult weather conditions.”
