A chance to celebrate the best of Havering’s night-time environment is the focus of the Havering NightLife Awards 2018.

Awards for Havering Nighttime enconomy
Councillor Viddy Persaud and some of the members of the Havering Community Safety Partnership launch the Havering NightLife Awards 2018

Havering Council is supporting the awards and the purpose of them is to showcase how joint partnership-working of local licensees, businesses and various agencies have helped to reduce crime and are continually improving the visitor’s experience in Havering.

Thousands of people visit town centres across the borough for an evening out, primarily on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Attracting such a large concentration of young people each weekend raises concerns among residents, particularly in relation to anti-social behaviour and drink-related crime.

Councillor Viddy Persaud, Cabinet Member for Public Protection and Safety, said:

“Our pubs, clubs, restaurants and bars are essential to our borough in creating a vibrant night-time economy. It is vital that our residents and visitors can go out around the borough, enjoy a variety of venues, but most importantly, feel safe.

“While people can vote for their favourite place, the Council, together with our partners, will be looking at how these venues offer safety and security for people on a night out and are complying to all the necessary regulations.”

The awards are run in conjunction with Best Bar None - an accreditation scheme of national awards supported by the Home Office and the drinks industry which is aimed primarily at promoting responsible management and operation of alcohol licensed premises.

The awards will combine the safety aspect but with the public also being able to vote for their favourite venues, it is also a chance to put the spotlight on those businesses that make Havering a place to be for entertainment and leisure.

The Council’s community safety team is working alongside the Met Police, London Fire Brigade, Trading Standards, licensing and independent assessors to inspect venues to ensure they are complying with licences and regulations.

One lucky voter will receive a pair of tickets to attend the awards evening on Wednesday 28 November, which will be held at the ATIK nightclub in Romford and will be celebrating the winning venues.
