Havering communities are set to benefit from a new charge for developers who are building new homes and large retail projects within the borough.
After being adopted at Full Council in July, the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) launched in Havering last month.
The CIL means that developers working in Havering will now need to pay a statutory charge for regeneration projects taking place within the borough. This money will be invested back into local communities, going towards vital amenities.
The Levy is collected when planning permission for new developments is given.
Councillor Damian White, Leader of Havering Council, said:
“The funding raised from the levy will be used to ensure residential and larger retail developments contribute towards the costs of providing necessary infrastructure for our borough.
“The decision by Cabinet to introduce a CIL Charging Schedule for Havering will give the Council and local communities much more control over how new infrastructure is funded, which will in turn benefit local residents in the areas where new developments are built in Havering.”
