South Essex Crematorium Gardens of Remembrance to re-open

Published: Friday, 24 April 2020

Havering Council has announced that the South Essex Crematorium Gardens of Remembrance will re-open from Saturday 25 April as part of new government guidance.

The remembrance gardens to the crematorium in Upminster will be open from 9am to 7pm (last entry 6.45pm) – which are the usual opening hours at this time of year.

However, the car park remains closed to those visiting the gardens due to the temporary morgue located there.

Only restricted parking is available for those families attending funeral services Monday to Friday. Entry is through the side gates on foot.

Some memorials and ashes burial areas remain closed off at this time and it is advised to check ahead of your visit.

You can contact the offices at the crematorium via email cemeteries@havering.gov.uk (Mon to Fri) and information is also on the crematorium website

The Book of Remembrance and Chapel of Meditation at the Crematorium will remain closed in accordance with Coronavirus Act Legislation until further notice.

Earlier this week, the four cemeteries in Romford, Hornchurch, Rainham and Upminster were also re-opened for visitors.

Social distancing guidelines around Covid-19 will remain in place on all sites and residents are reminded to follow these rules when visiting both the crematorium and cemeteries. Notices on site will provide further advice.

Councillor Damian White, Leader of Havering Council, said:

“We know that visiting loved ones resting places at the crematorium and our cemeteries will bring much comfort especially during these difficult times.

“While the crematorium and cemeteries are now open again to visitors, we remind everyone visiting that we need you to observe the social distancing guidelines to keep you and our staff safe.”
