Havering set to cheer for volunteers as community fund beats target

Havering Heroes
Published: Monday, 1 June 2020

Havering Council is calling on residents to thank local heroes to mark Volunteers Week. It comes as the Havering Heroes Community Fund surpasses its £10,000 target.

Starting today (1 June 2020) until 7 June, Volunteers Week is a chance for residents to join Havering Volunteer Centre in celebrating the invaluable contribution that volunteers have made to the community during the coronavirus outbreak.

Residents can join the celebrations by decorating their windows with bunting and, at 8pm this evening, raising a glass (or a cuppa) on their doorstep to say ‘Cheers to the Volunteers’.

Today also marks the fundraising deadline for the Council’s Havering Heroes Community Fund, which was set up to help voluntary and community organisations through these difficult times.

Thanks to the generosity of residents and businesses throughout Havering, including a recent £1,000 donation from TheFore, the fund has beaten its target of £10,636 by over £600 three days before the fundraising deadline.

All funds will go towards increasing the Havering Funding Programme and ensure more emergency grants are available to charities and voluntary organisations who need them.

Councillor Damian White, Leader of Havering Council, said:

“Whilst the celebrations may have changed this year, never have the efforts of our volunteers been more apparent than the way these #HaveringHeroes, across multiple community support groups, voluntary community sector and charities, have responded in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

“I have spoken over the past ten weeks about how humbling and inspiring our volunteers have been for me personally, as I know they have been to many residents. You truly represent what makes Havering such a special place to live, and I am so immensely proud of you all.”

Paul Rose, Chair of Havering Compact, added:

“I couldn’t possibly list all of the incredible acts of kindness and selflessness that have taken place during this pandemic, but there have been thousands. People have gone out of their way to remind us during this crisis about what it means to be a good neighbour, to be part of a community that looks out for one another.

“Volunteers from across the borough took up that challenge during the very early stages of the pandemic to help the most vulnerable in our community and ensure no-one was left behind. Strangers are now friends and there is a reinforced sense of belonging and tolerance.”

We continue to support the fundraising for Havering’s Food banks in Harold Hill, Collier Row/Romford and Rainham, to help combat poverty and hunger.

They have 30 days left on their fundraiser and have £575 pledged of a £5,519 target.
