Council hold a one minute’s silence of reflection to mark Windrush Day 2020
Havering Council are celebrating the 72 year anniversary since the HMT Empire Windrush ship first landed in Britain with a day of education and commemoration.
Employees across the Council held a one minute’s silence at 11am to reflect on our progress as a borough and as nation.
It was also an acknowledgement of thanks to the volunteers, key workers, bus drivers, NHS nurses and frontline workers from Black African and Caribbean backgrounds who have risked their lives every day since the start of the coronavirus pandemic to support our community.
The Council are also encouraging its residents to celebrate Windrush Day by taking part in a day of education to learn more about who the Windrush generation are, what their experiences were, the challenges they have faced and how they have contributed to British society.
Havering Libraries have shared six books on the Windrush generation on their Facebook page, which are available on our online eBooks and audiobooks, along with information on Windrush Day 2020 for residents who would like to learn more.
Councillor Damian White, Leader of Havering Council, said:
“Whilst we cannot come together to celebrate Windrush Day this year, it is still a great opportunity for us all to celebrate the contribution this generation has made, and continues to make, to our community.
“It is also important for us to use the wealth of education available to learn more about the history of the Windrush generation, and what their experiences were when they first arrived in Britain 72 years ago today.
